Andaman Islands, Nov. 2007

The Andaman Islands, although part of India, are closer to Thailand.  They are accessible via Kolkata and Chennai by air or sea.  Visitors are strictly limited to specific islands and each visitor is allowed a maximum stay of 30 days.

The islands are home to indigenous tribes, many of whom were displaced by the 2004 tsunami.  Contact with the indigenous peoples is discouraged.

Tourism is coming rapidly to South Andaman and Havelock Islands, with hotel and bungalows springing up everywhere.  Neil Island has been slower to develop and the pace is much more relaxed.
